How to test

Follow these steps to get an accurate deadzone reading.

Connect

Plug in over USB or pair over Bluetooth, then press any button so the browser detects it.

Let it sit idle

Set the controller down and leave both sticks untouched, then click sample idle noise.

Read the suggested deadzone value for each stick, based on the noise actually observed.

Move each stick slowly in small circles near center to see exactly where real input begins.

Reading your results

Deadzone is reported the same way as other stick readings, from 0.000, no deadzone, to 1.000, the full range ignored.

Why deadzones exist

Analog sticks are electronic devices, and their sensors can report small non zero values at rest due to manufacturing tolerance, temperature, or ordinary electronic noise, even on a stick that is otherwise perfectly healthy. Without a deadzone, that tiny noise would show up as constant, unwanted input, so games and controllers ignore anything inside a small radius near center.

The tradeoff is responsiveness. A wider deadzone hides more noise but also swallows small intentional movements near center, which matters most in precision aiming and slow camera control. The goal is the smallest deadzone that still keeps your specific stick still at rest, which is exactly what the sampling feature above is measuring.

A deadzone can also mask mild stick drift rather than fix it, since a wide enough setting will hide small drift the same way it hides noise. If your suggested deadzone is unusually high, it is worth running the Stick Drift Test to check whether the stick itself is actually healthy.

Radial vs per axis deadzones

Two common ways games and controller software apply a deadzone.

Radial deadzone

Treats the stick position as a single vector and ignores any movement inside a circular radius centered on zero. This keeps sensitivity even in every direction and is the most common approach in competitive games.

Per axis deadzone

Applies separate thresholds to the X and Y axes individually. This is useful when one axis is noisier than the other, since it can mask a noisy axis while keeping a clean axis fully responsive.

What is a joystick deadzone

A deadzone is the small radius around the center of an analog stick where input is intentionally ignored. It exists so sensor noise and minor stick imperfections do not trigger unwanted movement.

Why do controllers have deadzones

Without a deadzone, tiny sensor fluctuations would register as constant small input, causing a character or camera to creep on its own. The deadzone is the tradeoff between clean centering and full responsiveness.

How does this deadzone test work

The tool reads your stick's raw X and Y axis values through the Gamepad API and plots them live. The auto suggest feature samples the stick while it sits idle and recommends a radius just large enough to cover the noise it observed.

What is a healthy deadzone value

Under 0.05 is a tight deadzone typical of pro grade controllers. Between 0.05 and 0.10 is the normal factory range on most modern controllers. Between 0.10 and 0.20 is wide but usable. Above 0.20 usually points to a worn stick or a misconfigured setting.

Can I reduce my controller deadzone

Yes, in software. Many games and tools such as Steam Input let you set a custom deadzone. Setting it below your hardware's natural noise floor will reintroduce phantom input, so test the suggested value from this tool first.

Does a deadzone fix stick drift

A deadzone masks mild drift by ignoring small magnitude input, but it does not fix the underlying hardware issue. Run the Stick Drift Test alongside this one to see whether your stick is actually healthy or just being hidden by a wide deadzone.

What is the difference between radial and per axis deadzone

Why does my deadzone feel different in different games

Each game applies its own deadzone setting on top of what your hardware naturally reports. This tool measures the hardware floor, the smallest deadzone your specific controller can safely use, but a game can always set its own value wider than that.

Is a smaller deadzone always better

No. A deadzone set smaller than your controller's actual noise floor causes phantom input, where the stick registers movement you did not make. The best value is the smallest one that still keeps the stick still at rest.

Can I test a PS5 DualSense controller here

Yes. The DualSense works over both USB and Bluetooth, and both analog sticks are read live in this tool.

Can I test an Xbox controller here
