N key rollover
How many keys can be held down together before extra presses stop registering. Cheap membrane boards cap low, gaming mechanicals support far more.
Ghosting
A specific combination of keys causes one of them to silently fail to register, caused by shared rows and columns in a budget keyboard's internal circuit.
Chatter
The opposite problem, a single press producing extra duplicate keystrokes, usually from worn or oxidized switch contacts rather than a circuit limitation.
Most keyboards read input through a matrix circuit, where each key sits at the intersection of a row and column wire rather than having its own dedicated connection. This keeps manufacturing cheap, but it means certain combinations of simultaneously pressed keys can create an electrically ambiguous signal the controller cannot resolve, which is exactly what causes ghosting.
Mechanical keyboards commonly add individual diodes to every key, which removes that ambiguity entirely and is why they can reliably offer 6 key rollover or true N key rollover where a membrane keyboard cannot. The USB HID protocol itself technically caps standard reporting at 6 keys plus modifiers unless a keyboard implements a custom NKRO descriptor, which is why even some gaming keyboards need a driver or a dedicated NKRO mode enabled to unlock their full rollover.
Testing rollover honestly requires deliberate effort, since ordinary typing rarely holds more than 3 or 4 keys at once even on a keyboard capable of far more, this is exactly why the test above asks you to press a larger cluster of keys together rather than relying on natural typing alone.

What is N key rollover and why does it matter
N key rollover, or NKRO, is how many keys a keyboard can register held down at the same time. Cheap membrane keyboards often cap at 2 or 3 simultaneous keys, which can silently drop an input in a game that needs several keys held together, such as sprinting, jumping, and interacting at once.
What is keyboard ghosting
Ghosting happens when a specific combination of keys produces a missing or phantom keypress, caused by how a budget keyboard's internal circuit matrix shares rows and columns between keys. A classic example is a movement key silently failing to register while two other keys are held at the same time.
Why does the keyboard test require me to click the keyboard area first
Browsers only send key events to whichever element currently has focus. Clicking the visual keyboard area gives it that focus so your key presses are captured, if you click elsewhere or switch tabs, key events will stop registering until you click back.
Why did some of my shortcuts not get detected
Certain key combinations, such as switching windows or locking your screen, are intercepted by your operating system before they ever reach the browser. This is expected behavior and not a sign of a keyboard problem, those specific combinations cannot be tested from any web page.
My keyboard is advertised as NKRO but only shows 4 simultaneous keys, why
Ordinary typing rarely holds more than 3 or 4 keys at once, so a normal typing test will not reveal true NKRO on its own. Deliberately press 6 or more keys at the same time, for example A, S, D, F, J, and K together, to properly exercise higher rollover.
What is keyboard chatter
Chatter is the opposite of a stuck key, a single physical press registering as two or more rapid keypresses, usually from worn or oxidized switch contacts. It shows up as unwanted duplicate letters while typing normally, worth checking directly in a text field if you suspect it.
Does this keyboard tester work with any layout

Why did the test flag a stuck key I was not actually holding
If you genuinely held a key down for more than 5 seconds during testing, that will register as a stuck key flag even though nothing is wrong. Release all keys between individual tests to avoid this false flag.
Is my keystroke data stored anywhere
No. Every key press is processed locally in your browser purely to update the visual display and is not sent to a server unless you choose to export a report yourself.
