Gyroscope vs accelerometer

A gyroscope senses rotation, how a device is turning around its own center point while that center stays roughly in place. It is what lets a phone know it has been tilted or spun, independent of whether the phone is also being carried somewhere.

An accelerometer senses linear acceleration and orientation relative to gravity, which is how a phone knows which way is down, or that it has just been shaken or dropped. The two sensors are complementary rather than overlapping, most motion based apps and games combine both for a complete picture of how a device is moving.

Does this test your controller too? Modern controllers like the PS5 DualSense and Nintendo Joy Con include their own gyroscope for motion aiming, but the standard browser Gamepad API that every tool on this site uses does not expose that sensor data. A controller's gyroscope can only be read by the game or console software directly, not by a website.

How do I run this phone gyroscope test

What do pitch, roll, and yaw actually mean

Can a gyroscope test detect a faulty sensor

It can reveal obvious problems, such as an axis that never updates or values that jump erratically with no physical movement, but confirming a genuine hardware fault usually also involves comparing behavior against a known working device of the same model.

Does the gyroscope also track my phone's position in space

No. The gyroscope only reports rotation, not location. Tracking position or movement through space is handled by a combination of the accelerometer and, outdoors, GPS.

No. Every reading happens locally in your browser and is not sent to a server unless you choose to export a report yourself.

What is rotation rate and why is it shown separately

Rotation rate is how fast the device is currently rotating around each axis, measured in degrees per second, as opposed to pitch, roll, and yaw, which describe the device's current absolute orientation. Showing both gives a fuller picture of the sensor's behavior.
