Strong motor vs weak motor

Most controllers include two separate rumble motors rather than one. The strong motor spins a larger, heavier weight relatively slowly, producing the deep, low frequency rumble you feel across the whole controller during a big impact or explosion in a game. The weak motor spins a smaller weight much faster, producing a lighter, higher pitched buzz used for finer texture like gunfire or engine vibration.

Because they are separate components with their own wiring, one can fail while the other keeps working perfectly, which is exactly why this tool tests them independently rather than only offering a single combined test. Newer controllers such as the PS5 DualSense use voice coil actuators instead of simple spinning weights, giving noticeably finer haptic detail, though the browser still drives them through the same standard interface.

How does a browser test controller vibration

Browsers expose a vibration actuator on connected controllers through the Gamepad API. Calling the play effect method tells the controller to fire its motors at a requested intensity for a set duration. The browser cannot read vibration back, so this tool combines that output with your own tactile confirmation for each motor.

Why does only one motor vibrate

Why does Firefox not support controller vibration

Some browsers have historically limited or omitted the vibration actuator over privacy and fingerprinting concerns. Chrome, Edge, and other Chromium based browsers currently offer the most reliable support. Try Chrome or Edge before assuming a hardware fault.

Does running a vibration test damage the controller

No. Each test fires for a short duration at an intensity you choose, well below what a game routinely demands during normal play. A few seconds of diagnostic testing is harmless.

Why does Bluetooth vibration feel weaker than wired

Bluetooth has more limited bandwidth than a wired connection, and some controllers reduce vibration power wirelessly to save battery. If wired vibration feels normal but wireless feels weak, that is expected behavior, not a fault.

Can this test detect adaptive trigger haptics

Only partially. This tool drives the standard dual motor rumble effect, which every supported controller responds to. Adaptive trigger resistance is a separate motorized system that browsers cannot read or control, covered on the Adaptive Trigger Test page instead.

Can I test a PS5 DualSense controller for vibration here

Yes. The DualSense supports the standard vibration interface over both USB and Bluetooth, though USB tends to give the most consistent results.
