Both are read the same way by this tool, but the underlying hardware and typical faults are quite different.
Laptop trackpad
A dedicated glass or plastic surface with its own controller chip, standard across nearly every laptop regardless of brand. Common issues include worn corners, a cursor that jumps, or gestures that stop registering after a driver update.
Controller touchpad
A capacitive surface built into a PlayStation controller, sitting above a single mechanical click switch for the whole pad. Common issues include one worn corner, an unreliable click, or reduced sample rate over Bluetooth compared to a wired connection.
A touch surface reporting fewer updates per second feels laggy and imprecise, since the cursor or in game action only moves as often as new data arrives. A healthy wired connection commonly delivers around 100 to 120 samples per second, while a Bluetooth connection often settles lower simply due to the wireless link, not necessarily a fault.
Dead zones matter because they are usually localized physical damage rather than a general fault, a corner of the capacitive layer that has stopped sensing touch while the rest of the surface works perfectly. Confirming a dead zone with a deliberate, slow sweep across the suspect area is the most reliable way to separate a real dead zone from simply not having covered that area during a fast swipe.
The click mechanism on both a laptop trackpad and a controller touchpad is a separate mechanical part from the touch sensing layer, a physical switch rated for a large but finite number of presses. After extended heavy use that switch can develop intermittent contact, which is why this test runs three separate click attempts rather than trusting a single press.

How does this online touchpad sensor tool work

How do I test my PS5 DualSense touchpad in a browser
Connect the DualSense over USB to a Chromium based browser such as Chrome or Edge, select controller pad mode, then swipe your finger across the physical touchpad. On a wired connection the touchpad drives the system cursor, so swiping generates pointer events the test can capture the same way it captures a laptop trackpad.
Why does the canvas need to be under my cursor during the swipe
Pointer events only fire on the element your cursor is currently over. As long as your swipe keeps the on screen cursor moving across the test surface, every movement registers, keep the browser window focused during the test.
What is a healthy sample rate for a touchpad
60 events per second or higher is healthy for most laptop trackpads and a wired controller touchpad. A wireless or Bluetooth connection can read lower, sometimes around 60 down from a wired 120, without indicating a fault. Anything consistently below 30 per second suggests throttling or a driver issue.
What are touchpad dead zones
A dead zone is a region of the touch surface that never registers input no matter how you swipe across it. This test divides the surface into a grid and marks any cell you genuinely covered but that produced zero events, which usually points to physical damage in that specific area.
Why did only one pointer register when I used two fingers
Multi touch detection through standard pointer events depends heavily on your browser version and operating system driver, some configurations only expose a single simultaneous pointer even on hardware that physically supports more. This is frequently a software limitation rather than a hardware fault.
What causes an unreliable touchpad click
Both laptop trackpads and the DualSense touchpad rely on a mechanical switch underneath the surface to register a physical click, independent of where you press. After extended use that switch can develop intermittent contact, producing missed or occasional false clicks.
Which controllers have a touchpad to test

Does an Xbox or Nintendo controller have a touchpad
