Controller anatomy explained

Every button, stick, and port on a modern controller, labeled and explained, along with what is inside the shell and where to go if one of these parts stops working correctly.

The side you hold facing you, where most of your inputs happen.

Share or Create button

Captures screenshots and clips, and opens sharing options on supported systems.

Touchpad

A clickable trackpad used for menu navigation, swipe gestures, and some in game inputs.

Options or Menu button

Opens the pause menu, settings, or system overlay depending on the game or platform.

Directional buttons

The D pad, a four way digital input used for menus and grid based movement.

Action buttons

The primary face buttons mapped to most in game actions.

Left stick

The primary analog stick, usually used for movement.

Right stick

The second analog stick, usually used for camera or aim control.

Home or system button

Wakes the console, opens the system menu, and turns the controller on.

Turbo or function button

Found on some third party pads, used to trigger rapid fire or custom macros.

Speaker

A small built in speaker used for game audio cues on some controllers.

No sound, confirm the controller is not muted in system audio settings

Headset jack

A 3.5mm port for a wired headset, carrying both audio and microphone signal.

A USB port used for charging and for a stable wired connection during play.

Specifications

General specifications that apply across most modern controllers, actual figures vary by manufacturer and model.

Connectivity

Wired USB and wireless Bluetooth or a proprietary 2.4GHz dongle, depending on the model.

Stick sensors

Potentiometer sensors are most common, with Hall effect and TMR sensors appearing on newer and premium models for better drift resistance.

Triggers

Digital on most budget pads, analog on nearly all first party and pro controllers, with some supporting adjustable resistance.

Vibration

One or two eccentric rotating mass motors on most controllers, with some premium models using more advanced haptic actuators.

Battery

Wireless models use a built in rechargeable lithium ion battery, typically charged over USB.

Weight and size

Varies by manufacturer and model, generally between 200 and 300 grams for a standard wireless controller.

What is inside

A general overview of the main components under the shell, without opening a specific controller.

Mainboard

The central circuit board holding the microcontroller that reads every input and sends it out over USB or Bluetooth.

Stick sensor modules

A potentiometer or Hall effect sensor mounted under each analog stick, reporting its X and Y position to the mainboard.

Button contact membrane

A conductive rubber layer under the buttons that completes a small circuit each time you press one.

Vibration motors

Small motors mounted in each grip, spinning an offset weight to produce the rumble you feel.

Battery and charging circuit

A lithium ion cell on wireless controllers, paired with a small circuit that manages charging over USB.

Speaker and microphone

Present on some controllers, wired into the mainboard's audio circuit for built in sound and voice input.
